Primary Metabolism in Citrus Fruit as Affected by Its Unique Structure

Citrus is one of the world’s most important fruit crops, contributing essential nutrients, such as vitamin C and minerals, to the human diet. It is characterized by two important traits: first, its major edible part is composed of juice sacs, a unique structure among fruit, and second, relatively high levels of citric acid are accumulated in the vacuole of the juice sac cell. Although the major routes of primary metabolism are generally the same in citrus fruit and other plant systems, the fruit’s unique structural features challenge our understanding of carbon flow into the fruit and its movement through all of its parts.

PGR For Controlling Pre-Harvest Fruit Drop And Improving Quality of Kinnow

A field trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of PGR (2, 4-D, NAA and GA3) at different concentrations on fruit drop and enhancement in fruit quality of Kinnow. Three sprays of PGR viz. 2, 4-D, NAA and GA3 were given to the Kinnow plants as per the treatment concentrations from initiation of flowering to before harvesting. The results revealed that among all the PGR’s tried at different concentrations, spray of 2, 4-D @ 30 ppm was the most promising in reducing the fruit drop in Kinnow as fruit physical and chemical characters were found to be superior as compared to all other treatments. There was an enhancement in the fruit size with the application of 2, 4-D @ 30 ppm, which led to an overall increase in the yield of Kinnow.

The effect of avocado sunblotch disease

The effect of avocado sunblotch disease (ASBD) on tree morphology, fruit maturity, yield and quality of ‘Hass’ avocado in South Africa

Avocado sunblotch viroid (ASBVd) is found in many avocado-growing regions of the world, where it affects fruit yield and quality. The trees develop two types of infections: symptomatic and symptomless infections. Symptoms are most obvious as yellow streaks on leaves, fruit and green stems of symptomatic trees and symptomless carrier trees do not display any such symptoms. Symptomless carrier trees are considered the primary source of disease transmission in orchards. Hence, this study investigated the impact of ASBVd-infected symptomless carrier trees on tree morphology, fruit maturity, yield and quality of ‘Hass’ avocado from 2019 until 2021. Differences were observed in the orchard between infected and healthy trees; trees with medium and high viroid concentrations excessively produced flowers, lost leaves during flowering and ultimately bore few to no fruit at the end of the season.

Fruit size in Star Ruby Grapefruit.

The usage of auxins with various cultural techniques to increase fruit size in Star Ruby Grapefruit

Fruit size is a key parameter for quality and increases the profitability for export markets in citrus production in Turkey. Fruit size can be enhanced by several techniques such as girdling and thinning. Various plant growth regulators are known to affect the growth and size of citrus fruit. Thus the effects of synthetic auxin applications (2,4-DP and 3,5,6-TPA) at different physiological periods, girdling practices, pruning practices, foliar application of potassium and various combinations of these practices on the fruit size and yield, fruit retention rate, and leaf chlorophyll concentration and fluorescence of Star Ruby grapefruit cultivar were investigated.
