Flowers are a critical determinate of eventual yield of perennial fruit trees. Therefore, an understanding of the underlying mechanisms and influencing factors, as well as the general phenology of flower development in citrus, is critically important to the sustainability of successful commercial citrus production.
This series of articles will aim to provide South African citriculturists with a concise, up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the various stages of reproductive phenology of Citrus. This current article will be a general introduction to the physiology of citrus flowering, with the following two articles dealing with the phenology of flower development and morphogenesis from a flower to a fruit.
